In older adults, proper health really does depend on the smallest of habits, and one of the most important is proper hand hygiene. As we age, our immune systems naturally weaken, and it becomes easier for infections and illnesses to be transmitted. That’s why caregivers play such an important role in developing clean, healthy spaces through washing hands often.
These everyday activities like helping with meals, medication, or mobility, can expose older adults to dangerous viruses and bacteria. Handwashing is among the greatest ways to prevent infection, including not catching colds, the flu, and stomach viruses, all of which are worse for older adults.
Caregivers must wash their hands:
Technique isn’t everything, however. Hands must be washed in soap and warm water for a solid 20 seconds, special attention being given to areas between fingers and under nails. In the absence of soap and water, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a great substitute.
Assisting older people in performing hand washing can go a long way. Providing them with soft towels, gentle soap, and effective hand sanitizer access makes them independent yet safe.
At MIWA Home Care, our caregivers understand that infection prevention starts with simple routine behavior. We use every precaution to ensure the elderly individual is well cared for, comfortable, and safe in a hygienic home setting.
Because keeping health in safe hands starts, literally, with soft hands.
