Winter season is challenging, especially for seniors. As the snow falls it makes the sidewalk icy and increase the chances of hazardous slip and falls. Below are some precautions that ensure safety and make the season beautiful.

Invest in Proper Footwear

The most important step is to wear the right pair of shoes. One should always select non-slip soles made from rubber or similar materials. Adding removable ice cleats to your footwear also adds extra grip. Lastly, always wear the shoe of your size to ensure comfort and the support you need.

Walk with Care

Even after choosing the right pair of footwear you still need to be attentive while walking, move slowly and take short steps. Keep your body slightly leaned forward to maintain balance, and avoid carrying heavy items that could throw you off balance. If you’re unsure about the conditions, test the ground with a cane or walker equipped with ice grips before taking a step.

Prepare Your Surroundings

Keep a check on your surroundings and keep you home as safe as possible. Keep the stairs and sidewalks including walkways snow free for safe walk, it is recommended to keep it clear with assistance as snowy weather could be fatal for seniors. Sprinkle sand or salt on snow to improve the grip on walkways. Installing handrails along stairs and entryways can also offer extra support when needed.

Stay Warm and Flexible

If you go out or not make sure to keep your muscles flexible and reduce muscle stiffness. It is recommended to use heating pads and stay warm by wearing layers and heavy clothing including gloves and scarf. Indoors, ensure your home is heated to at least 68°F to keep your body comfortable. Regular stretching or light exercises can also help maintain mobility and reduce stiffness while maintaining a nice body temperature.

Avoid Risky Areas

Avoid the risk of going out if it’s snowing, however if it’s really important then be careful while choosing a route. Use well cleared paths avoiding slippery snowing patches or icy patches.

Stay Connected and Prepared

To be safe at all times make sure to keep your phone charged and a battery backup in case of emergency. If you’re planning to go out, take someone or stay connected incase you experience a fall it would be easier to call for help.
