June is known as National Safety Month. It’s time to spread awareness on how to keep the house safe, especially for older people. This awareness is important for older people as the simple things in their lives start to get difficult. These difficulties occur due to weakness of vision and sometimes due to overall health changes. So the risk of getting hurt in the house becomes very high for older people. The caregivers can make the house safer for their loved ones and thus support their aging loved ones.

One of the big causes of injury among older people is falling. These injuries occur due to accidents that might happen in their own houses, often due to loose rugs, bad lighting, or wet bathroom floors. By keeping in view these causes and taking such steps as cleaning the home, improving lighting, or installing supportive bars, the caregivers can significantly reduce the injuries among older family members.

The safe medication can be a key concern. Older people mostly take multiple medicines, which can make them confused, miss a dose, or accidentally overdose. A clear system, such as a medication organizer and regular check-up with the doctor, ensures that the medication is taken safely by the patient.

It’s also important to be ready for every emergency. The smoke alarms need to be checked regularly, and emergency numbers must be easy to access. Through these steps, the older people feel confident that help is available for them every time, especially if they live alone.

Staying safe isn’t much about physical safety; emotional and mental health also contribute to overall safety. When the older one feels lonely and starts to lose memory, it affects their life. Someone should be there for the daily routine, as it provides comfort and makes it easy to identify something wrong early on.
