Caregivers and families will want to keep the elders in their care healthy and safe from harm during flu season. Elders are at increased risk for flu-related complications, so prevention and timely intervention are critical.

Encourage Flu Vaccination

Yearly influenza immunization reduces the probability of infection among the elderly and minimizes the severity of illness when infection is present. Households must get vaccinated early in the season so that they are well protected in winter.

Practice Healthy Habits

The immunity can be increased with a daily routine. The old people must be reminded to consume nutritious food, including a variety of fruits, greens, and whole-grain foods, and to consume plenty of water. Regular exercise and sound sleep will also keep them healthy and prevent the flu.

Practice Good Hygiene

Good hygiene practice can avoid the flu.  Get the elderly and their caregivers to wash their hands often with soap and water, or use a hand sanitizer.  Having doorknobs, telephones, and countertops regularly cleaned will help check the flow of germs.

Be Aware of Early Symptoms

Assess the initial symptoms of fatigue, including fever, chills, and body aches. Early attention to it can avoid complications and problems, and receive proper treatment.

Restrict Contact

Attempt to restrict going out to crowded population areas and request sick visitors to leave and return when healthy.

Caregivers at MIWA Home Care are trained to assist elderly people as they stay healthy, warm, and safe throughout winter. You, too, can help ease the worry of family members and improve the homes of their elderly relatives.
